Tragedy at Lincoln University: One Dead, Six Injured During Homecoming Weekend Shooting

Lincoln University, Pennsylvania A night meant for celebration turned tragic on Saturday when a shooting occurred during homecoming festivities at Lincoln University leaving one person dead and six others injured officials confirmed.

According to authorities, the incident took place near the university’s International Cultural Center where students, alumni, and visitors were gathered after the homecoming football game.

“This was supposed to be a joyous occasion,” said Lincoln University Police Chief Marc Partee. “Homecoming is a time when people return to celebrate their alma mater but that celebration was interrupted by senseless gunfire.”

     The Incident

Chester County District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe described the scene as “chaotic,” with people running for cover in every direction after shots rang out. Seven people were struck by gunfire, and several others were injured while fleeing.

Officials identified the deceased as Jujuan Jeffers, 25 of Wilmington, Delaware who was shot in the head and pronounced dead shortly after midnight.

The six other victims were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Their current conditions have not been publicly released.

     Investigation Underway

Authorities say one individual was detained for carrying a concealed firearm without a license, but it remains unclear if that weapon was used in the shooting. Investigators believe there may have been multiple shooters, though a clear motive has not yet been determined.

“This does not appear to be an incident where someone came in with the intent to cause mass harm,” de Barrena-Sarobe said. “We’re still piecing together exactly what happened.”

Law enforcement from local, state, and federal agencies including the FBI are assisting with the investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact authorities.

   Community and State Response

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, saying the weekend should have been a celebration of the nation’s first degree-granting Historically Black College and University (HBCU).

"Lori and I are praying for the six people injured, the families filled with worry, and the one soul who will not return home,” Shapiro wrote on social media. “May their memory be a blessing.”

The university announced that counseling services would be available for students and staff affected by the event. The campus is no longer under lockdown, though the area surrounding the shooting remains an active crime scene.

    A Disturbing Trend of Violence

The shooting at Lincoln University is part of a troubling pattern of violence at college and high school events across the United States this fall.

▫️ Howard University in Washington D.C., reported a shooting that injured five people during its homecoming weekend.

▫️ In Montgomery, Alabama two people were killed and twelve others injured following Alabama State’s homecoming game.

▫️Multiple shootings have also been reported at Mississippi high school football games, resulting in at least six deaths this month alone.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, the U.S. has experienced more than 350 mass shootings so far this year, with over 300 fatalities and 1,600 injuries.

     Honoring Lincoln University’s Legacy

Founded in 1854 Lincoln University holds a historic place as the nation’s first degree-granting HBCU. The university has produced generations of leaders and changemakers, and this year’s homecoming was intended to celebrate that legacy.

“This community is resilient,” said Chief Partee. “We will come together, heal, and continue to honor the spirit of Lincoln University.”
